All clip boards, ink jars, tables, and work surfaces as well as door handles, light switches and taps will have been cleaned with Steri-Dri. Likewise, all furniture will be cleaned and sanitised before and after each workshop. In the bathroom we use disposable paper towels, and there are anti-bac wipes to use on bathroom taps and handles after use. WHEN YOU ARRIVE When you arrive, we advise you to wear a face covering to enter your venue. We will ask you to use hand sanitiser and we will then show you to your seat. Once you are seated you may remove your mask if you wish, but we request that you use it again if you move around the venue, for example to use the bathroom. We adhere to keep guests socially distanced whenever possible. We also request that you use the sanitiser units around the studio if you move around. PROTECTIVE CLOTHING We are requesting that you bring your own face covering, unless medically exempt. You do not need to wear it when seated, but are welcome to keep it on if you prefer. During the workshop we will practice 'no touch teaching' and endeavour to assist you this way as much as possible. Staff will follow best practice when handling food and drinks, which will be served to you at your table. OTHER INFORMATION We continue to run workshops according to current government guidelines in each region. We aim to ventilate all venues by keeping windows or doors open as much as possible. You may want to bring a jumper or extra layer with you. You will still be able to buy our recommended products from your tutor. We prefer card payments but can still take cash . Please remain at home and contact us if you are feeling unwell on the day of your workshop. • Calligramay | ModernCalligraphyCo.

Join us throughout the month of May and get involved in some fun, creative challenges. We invite you to use the hashtag #TMCCCalligramay , so that we can see your creations and share a few each day on our Instagram Stories! Each week we've provided a prompt that features a shape and a theme to make your own calligram (picture made from words) - alternatively, you can opt to trace over our template using your own choice of colours and embellishments. You can find information about the weekly shapes and themes by clicking on the images below. We encourage you to be as creative as you wish - if you feel called to add illustrations or decorations to your calligraphy, please do! Perhaps the colours you choose could be inspired by the object of the prompt - a long quote would create the whole shape, or a list of names or places could be used to create the shape. You might like to experiment using a pointed nib if usually you prefer a brush pen, or have a go with watercolour if generally, you’re a fan of Copperplate! The aim of this month-long series of challenges is to spark your imagination and give you the opportunity to try out some interesting compositions. We're excited to see what you come up with and remember - please be sure to use the hashtag #TMCCCalligraMay so that we don’t miss your posts or stories...and don't be shy, post as many as you'd like, there's no limit! Each week we'll be selecting a winner who will receive a luxury Sakura sketchbook as a prize. We've created some free downloadable templates to help inspire you - whether you decide to use these or create your own calligraphs, by using the hastag #TMCCCalligraMay on Instagram or Facebook , we'll be able to see and share your fabulous creations. Calligraphy Kit Resources Embarking on your calligraphy journey can seem confusing at first, so let us explain what all the bits and pieces do! Contained in the set you have are all the tools you need to begin this relaxing and creative new hobby, you just need to grab some paper. We recommend Rhodia pads for practice, the paper is wonderfully smooth, perfect for calligraphy. Pen Holder Learning calligraphy using our Books. In your kit you have a wooden pen holder, it is universal so it can accommodate any nib, even very tiny ones. Avoid leaving it soaking in water, this will cause the paint to peel off and the wood to split. To clean it when it gets inky, wipe it with a damp cloth. In your kit you have a wooden pen holder, it is universal so it can accommodate any nib, even very tiny ones. Avoid leaving it soaking in water, this will cause the paint to peel off and the wood to split. To clean it when it gets inky, wipe it with a damp cloth. Pointed Nibs Within your kit are three different pointed nibs. Modern calligraphy uses this style of nib and the contrast of the stroke thickness is created by the pressure you apply. Different scribes prefer different nibs, but this is a brilliant selection, to begin with. All nibs need the protective glaze to be removed the first time they are used as it not only protects new nibs from rusting but also repels ink! You can do this by holding the nib over a flame, or rubbing it with toothpaste. Calligraphy Ink The black ink inside the kit is Chinese Ink. Beautifully dense, it won't feather when you work. When you open the pot, place it in the metal tin just in case of spills. Dip your nib up to the vent and remove any excess drops with a gentle tap on the edge of the bottle. Once you feel more confident, you can experiment with coloured inks, and even paint to make your calligraphy vibrant. If your ink drys onto the nib, wipe it away with a damp cloth. To work with paint, mix the paint and load it onto the nib with a paint brush. Calligraphy Guides The great news is that even if your handwriting is illegible, you can still do beautiful calligraphy. Start by getting used to the change of pressure you apply depending on whether you are moving the pen up or downwards. Work slowly, and as you practice this will become more natural until you're doing it without thinking. Work over the alphabet templates that you can print off here and work steadily. Focus on the motion and enjoy the process. Soon you won't need the templates and will be able to work freehand. Little and often is the best way to improve, 10 minutes a day. Really think about your technique and what you are doing, so that you eliminate bad habits and make small adjustments so that your style and flow improve. • Beginners | The Modern Calligraphy Company

Choosing the Calligraphy Workshop for You Not sure what workshop will suit you? Try an online or local workshop to see if you prefer working with a nib, or a brush pen. Once you have done that and have learned how to hold and control the pen or brush, our courses take your skills further. Modern calligraphy can be done with a pointed nib, brush pen and a paint brush. Learning calligraphy using our Books. If a workshop isn't for you, simply pick up one of our books and learn how to create modern calligraphy whilst creating simple projects. Each chapter teaches you another principle of modern calligraphy to help you create your own lovely lettering. If you think brush calligraphy is more your style than a nib, we have a book all about that too!!! Both these titles are for total beginners. If you already love modern calligraphy, but would like some inspiration to keep you going, have a look at our Little Book of Calming Calligraphy or the practice pad. Whichever one you go for, there are video tutorials to go with them. As it is easier to learn if you can watch someone doing it, Kirsten Burke shows you all the techniques you need to know. Nib or Brush Calligraphy? If you aren't sure of the difference between modern dip pen and brush pen calligraphy, and so not sure which workshop to choose, then here is a summary. Dip pen calligraphy is done with a pointed nib, it is perfect for creating fine, delicate work. Brush pen is much quicker to pick up, and is better if you like free, larger sized hand lettering. It can be more expressive and it gives a more casual style. Left Hander or complete beginner. Modern calligraphy is for everybody! We use universal pen holders which are suitable for right and left handers, over-writers, under-writers and also young people and children. Our workshops are suitable for beginners, and you don't need to be artistic or crafty or have nice handwriting. You'll be guided through each step, and with our help you'll get lovely results and have a fun, relaxed and engaging time with us. We're passionate about encouraging people to take time out from their busy lives, and allow themselves the simple pleasure of picking up a pen! What do you need to start? People are sometimes put off trying calligraphy with a penholder and nib, as they are worried about what to use. So, we are here to make it simple - we recommend a Leonardt 30 as most people that come on our beginner calligraphy workshops love it. It’s perfect for beginners as it’s easy to use, and is flexible enough to give you great thick and thin lines. Our 'Essential Calligraphy Kit' is an easy way to get started. It contains a penholder, my 3 favourite nibs, black ink and a tin to keep it all in. Is modern Calligraphy suitable for kids? What is it about modern calligraphy that is attracting teenagers to this “vintage” method of lettering?Well, calligraphy is changing, it's becoming more casual; whilst modern calligraphy does owe something to the traditional styles, this more relaxed way of writing beautifully and creatively is extremely popular with teen girls and boys. All our workshops are suitable for teenagers when accompanied by an adult. If you have a younger child that would like to come along, consider one of our Family Friendly Workshops. An adult needs to attend with them, so give it a try yourself, or perhaps granny or granddad might like to spend time with their grandkids, doing a craft that allows the generation gap to shrink. Children from the age of 9 get a huge amount from this simple and rewarding craft, we make the family workshops full of glitter and simple guides to follow, so book your place now. Can our Hen Party be a calligraphy workshop? We run fabulously fun Hen Parties, where your group is shown how to create pretty lettering, while sipping a glass of bucks fizz! We provide a personalised photograph album for the Bride to Be, which everyone at the workshop writes a personal message to the couple in with their new calligraphy skills! If you're looking for an unusual and relaxed activity before the big day, then please get in touch with us. How long are the calligraphy classes? Morning and evening classes are 2.5 hours. This may seem like a lot of time, but with figuring out the nib or brush, and starting to actually write some letters, this is actually a pretty nice pace to learn at. It leaves room to take small breaks, and sip on a coffee, with no sense of having to rush! We ensure everyone has a fun and relaxing time, with plenty of tea, coffee, cold drinks and snacks! Full day workshops are more immersive, running from 10am until 4pm, you have the chance to really get to grips with modern calligraphy. There's a delicious lunch provided, and plenty of time to get one on one guidance from the tutor and immerse yourself in all things calligraphic! What is brush calligraphy? If you’re nervous to try a nib and ink, you can get similar results with a ‘brush pen’. The difference between brush pens and felt-tip pens is that brush pens have a flexible tip like a paintbrush so you can create thick and thin lines. A small brush pen like our dual tip brush pen, or the Pentel fude touch brush pen will allow you to enjoy modern calligraphy without having to dip into ink. Larger brush pens give you calligraphy that is far bigger, so if you would like to be able to create both small and large brush lettering, we recommend our Dual Tip Brush Pen as it is the only pen in the UK with two sizes of brush tip: one small, one large. Twice the value as you get two pens in one! Can't make it to a workshop? We have lots of other ways for you to learn modern calligraphy.
