Calligraphy Kit Resources Embarking on your calligraphy journey can seem confusing at first, so let us explain what all the bits and pieces do! Contained in the set you have are all the tools you need to begin this relaxing and creative new hobby, you just need to grab some paper. We recommend Rhodia pads for practice, the paper is wonderfully smooth, perfect for calligraphy. ​ ​ ​ ​ Pen Holder Learning calligraphy using our Books. In your kit you have a wooden pen holder, it is universal so it can accommodate any nib, even very tiny ones. Avoid leaving it soaking in water, this will cause the paint to peel off and the wood to split. To clean it when it gets inky, wipe it with a damp cloth. Pointed Nibs Within your kit are three different pointed nibs. Modern calligraphy uses this style of nib and the contrast of the stroke thickness is created by the pressure you apply. Different scribes prefer different nibs, but this is a brilliant selection, to begin with. All nibs need the protective glaze to be removed the first time they are used as it not only protects new nibs from rusting but also repels ink! You can do this by holding the nib over a flame, or rubbing it with toothpaste. Calligraphy Ink The black ink inside the kit is Chinese Ink. Beautifully dense, it won't feather when you work. When you open the pot, place it in the metal tin just in case of spills. Dip your nib up to the vent and remove any excess drops with a gentle tap on the edge of the bottle. Once you feel more confident, you can experiment with coloured inks, and even paint to make your calligraphy vibrant. If your ink drys onto the nib, wipe it away with a damp cloth. To work with paint, mix the paint and load it onto the nib with a paint brush. Calligraphy Guides The great news is that even if your handwriting is illegible, you can still do beautiful calligraphy. Start by getting used to the change of pressure you apply depending on whether you are moving the pen up or downwards. Work slowly, and as you practice this will become more natural until you're doing it without thinking. Work over the alphabet templates that you can print off here and work steadily. Focus on the motion and enjoy the process. Soon you won't need the templates and will be able to work freehand. Little and often is the best way to improve, 10 minutes a day. Really think about your technique and what you are doing, so that you eliminate bad habits and make small adjustments so that your style and flow improve. TikTok Europe Client TikTok Location Multiple locations EMEA In-person calligraphy workshops at TikTok headquarters across Europe This project was evidence that for us, there is no such thing as last minute! Working with the agency AOK, in less than 3 weeks we planned and executed bespoke in-person Modern Calligraphy workshops for TikTok colleagues in 7 EMEA cities, plus a pre-recorded video workshop for use in other cities. The client wanted a skills workshop to support the comms plans for their brand values and engage colleagues in an enjoyable activity. ​ Objective This case study explores a dynamic approach to Modern Calligraphy workshops conducted across various international destinations, complemented by a pre-recorded video for virtual offices and a grand Master event in London. The initiative aimed to provide a global learning experience and foster community engagement. The workshops were aimed at teaching the fundamentals of calligraphy as well as integrating the brand values of the client, using TikTok's brand values as practice phrases. ​ The primary objective was to create an interactive and brand-centric learning experience for participants by introducing them to the fundamentals of modern calligraphy. The workshops aimed to be fun, inclusive, and confidence-building, aligning with TikTok's values. ​ We worked with the agency, and end client to design a comprehensive teaching plan covering the basics of modern brush pen calligraphy, focused on guiding participants through pen handling, letter forms, and the creation of beautiful words and phrases. ​ Execution Calligraphy tutors traveled to various destinations, including Madrid, Amsterdam, Dubai, Berlin, Tel Aviv, and Dublin. The live workshops were tailored to each location's preferences and needs. To cater to international offices without physical events, a pre-recorded video of the workshop was created. This video, aligned with the live sessions, was shared with 12 international offices for team-building events. Participants received worksheets and pens in advance. ​ A grand Master event was executed at the TikTok London Head Office. This event was designed not only for TikTok colleagues but also extended to include their loved ones. It served as a friends and family open-house event, enhancing community engagement. Results Within three weeks we pulled off a fabulous series of Modern Calligraphy team building workshops for 19 locations through EMEA, 7 of which were taught in person. It was possible for our tutors to fly with the materials for each event in hand luggage, reducing the need for complicated shipments of workshop materials and keeping things simple. The client feedback was excellent - we'd understood their aims, created on-brand content, delivered highly skilled tuition and bespoke materials to multiple inte rnational locations, and the attendees loved the workshops. ​ Client comment: "The event was absolutely fantastic - the buzz was incredible and I'm so glad there was so much interaction with the calligraphy." Terms & Conditions ​ Cancellations and refunds Refunds and exchanges will only be made within 28 days of purchase and if the goods are faulty or do not meet the specifications of your order. This does not affect your statutory rights. ​ Terms & Conditions of sale for Mandalay Ltd trading as The Modern Calligraphy Company on the Internet. ​ Any order from a customer for Mandalay Ltd is deemed to constitute acceptance of the following terms and conditions. Prices are determined by reference to Mandalay Ltd prices on The Modern Calligraphy Company website at the date of acceptance of the order by Mandalay Ltd. All prices given by Mandalay Ltd include VAT at 20% Every effort is made to display the prices accurately. However, on rare occasions, mistakes happen. In this instance Mandalay Ltd will correct the mistake and inform the Customer so that they can decide whether to continue with the order at the correct price. Mandalay Ltd acknowledge orders on the understanding that delivery is subject to availability. Should an item not be available, the customer will be informed and an alternative offered. Any dates quoted for delivery of orders are approximate only and Mandalay Ltd shall not be liable for any delay in delivery of the orders however caused. Time for delivery shall not be of the essence unless previously agreed by Mandalay Ltd in writing. If Mandalay Ltd fails to deliver the order for any reasons other than any cause beyond Mandalay Ltd’s reasonable control or the Customer’s fault and Mandalay Ltd is liable to the Customer, Mandalay Ltd’s liability shall be limited to the invoice price of the goods. The Customer shall upon delivery, examine the goods and shall promptly (but in any event within 7 working days of delivery) notify Mandalay Ltd of any apparent damage, defect or shortage. In default of such written notification, Mandalay Ltd shall be deemed conclusively to have properly performed its obligations in relation to the purchase and sale of the goods. All illustrations, designs and general descriptions contained on the Mandalay Ltd website or otherwise provided to the customer are intended for general guidance only and shall not be binding on Mandalay Ltd and are only approximate indications of the type, size or colour of goods and are intended to represent a general idea of the goods described therein and the sales of such goods shall not be reference thereto. The customer shall take the goods at his own risk as to their corresponding with such examples or as to their quality, condition or sufficiency for any purpose. In the event of a claim, settlement will be limited to the value of the goods defectively produced and will in no way extend to consequential loss, howsoever caused. Risk of damage to or loss of the goods shall pass to the customer at the time of delivery or, if the customer wrongfully fails to take delivery of the goods at the time when Mandalay Ltd had tendered delivery of the goods. Mandalay Ltd shall not be liable to the customer or be deemed in breach of the agreement by reason of any delay in performing, or any failure to perform any of Mandalay Ltd’s obligations in relation to the goods, if the delay or failure was due to any cause beyond Mandalay Ltd’s reasonable control. Without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing the following shall be regarded as causes beyond Mandalay Ltd’s reasonable control: Act of God, explosion, flood tempest, fire or accident War or threat of war, sabotage, insurrection, civil disturbance or requisition. Acts, restrictions, regulations, bye-laws, prohibitions or measures of any kind on the part of governmental, parliamentary or local authority Import or export regulations or embargoes Strikes, lock-outs or any other industrial actions or trade disputes (whether involving employees of Mandalay Ltd or of a third party) Difficulties in obtaining raw materials, labour, fuel, parts or machinery. Power failure or breakdown in machinery. Any dispute, claims or proceedings of whatever nature between Mandalay Ltd and the Customer in connection with or arising out of the validity, construction or performance of this agreement shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of The High Court of England and Wales, to which both parties irrevocably submit.
