Automatic Plain Stroke Pen No 5 (1/2″- 12.5mm)
The automatic pen used in calligraphy is a distinctive tool known for its flat metal nib and self-feeding ink reservoir, making it ideal for broad-edged calligraphy styles such as Uncial, Gothic, Roman, and Italic scripts.
It has a split metal nib with two overlapping plates that hold ink between them. As you write, capillary action draws the ink to the nib edge, allowing for continuous, smooth ink flow without the need for frequent dipping. This unique construction gives the pen its name—"automatic"—because it delivers ink more consistently and effortlessly than a traditional dip pen.
Handmade in England for over 100 years, the hand-finished, smooth writing tip is unique: the pen can write and flow in any direction. The pen produces both very thin lines with contrasting thick lines. Can be used by right and left-handers, and young children.
Automatic pens are favored by professional and experimental calligraphers for large-scale lettering, expressive mark-making, and even abstract or gestural calligraphy. They can be used with a variety of inks, including waterproof, pigmented, and metallic types, depending on the surface and desired effect.
Sold loose without the plastic packaging and with a sample alphabet to scale.
