We're thrilled to offer a 10-week watercolour calligraphy course, for beginners.

Using a paintbrush and watercolours as calligraphy tools allows you to work at any scale, in any colour and on almost anything!! We're excited to introduce you to the multiple ways to incorporate colour into your brush lettering. Come and join us and discover degrees of transparency, ombre effects and building up the depth of colour within your calligraphy, all using the humble paintbrush!

Not only does working with a brush open up unlimited colour options, but it also means that you're able to write on all kinds of surfaces, from walls to wine glasses! The true freedom of brush calligraphy is that you can work at any size, on pretty much any surface.

You’ll be taught how to control the brush in simple steps so that we can build your confidence by gradually adding to your understanding of the techniques which make brush calligraphy so beautiful. We will show you how to blend colours, create ombré effects, and work with washes to create beautiful lettered artwork.

Week 1 The Foundations of Brush Calligraphy and controlling the brush. An introduction to creating letters with a water brush and paintbrush. How hard to press and where to change the pressure.

Week 2 Understanding alphabets and how to alter the style of your lettering.

Week 3 Mixing your colours, colour terms, experiments and using colour effectively.

Week 4 Using colour theory to create lettering compositions.

Week 5 Creative background washes, water control and exploring different effects.

Week 6 Combining calligraphy layouts with colour washes.

Week 7 Create beautiful loose watercolour florals to decorate your work.

Week 8 Combining calligraphy and Illustration. Creating borders and decorations.

Week 9 Constructing a Wreath and composing a finished piece, sketches and stages of a design.

Week 10 Completing the final piece incorporating a wash, wreath, border or another decorative element. Personalised guidance with composition and colour choices.

The Kit

Everything you need is posted to your door. A Van Gogh watercolour pallet with 15 vibrant colours, a water brush, pipette, a size 8 and a size 5 watercolour brush, washi tape, Bleed Proof White Paint, Goldline pressed watercolour paper, Daler-Rowney Langton Prestige sheets. A full-colour workbook and alphabet template which comes to a total of £115 and is included in the ticket price if you select the kit option.

Every session of this course will be recorded, so if you miss a week for any reason you will able to watch the recording to catch up!
