Spend a relaxed, creative day in our new studios learning with master calligrapher Kirsten Burke, exploring the expressive possibilities of the automatic pen.

Known for her gestural, mark-making style, Kirsten will guide you through the unique behaviour of this fascinating tool, how pressure, speed and movement create bold strokes, delicate hairlines and the spontaneous splashes of ink that give the work its character. Rather than aiming for perfection, the focus is on rhythm, confidence and allowing the pen to respond to your hand.

You’ll experiment with layered colour, energetic lettering and a small capitals alphabet to bring structure alongside your expressive marks, gradually developing your own composition over the course of the day.

By the end of the retreat you’ll leave with a finished artwork, practical skills to continue at home, and the experience of a day spent immersed in creativity, ink and conversation in the calm setting of the studio.

Additional information

All the materials you need are provided. We also have a small shop at our studio, stocking some of our favourite calligraphy supplies, including the items you will have used during your workshop so you can buy your favourites and continue your calligraphy journey at home!

We would recommend bringing an apron or wearing old clothes incase of ink stains.
