This course is designed especially for complete beginners, so no previous calligraphy experience is needed. We’ll guide you through everything step by step, from preparing your nib to forming your first elegant letterforms. Even if your handwriting feels messy, you’ll be surprised how quickly your lettering begins to flow.

Across the five sessions, you’ll explore how to work with ink and metallic paints directly from the nib, how to shape your letters with bounce and flow, and how to bring your writing to life. Each week finishes with a complete project, so you’ll leave not only with new skills, but with a growing collection of personalised stationery to be proud of.

What You’ll Learn & Make

Week 1 – The Basics & Your First Card

Learn how to prepare your nib, hold the pen correctly, and build control through guided drills. Discover the foundations of modern letterforms and create your first colourful greeting card using vibrant inks.

Week 2 – Beautifully Addressed Envelopes

Continue building confidence with your pen while practising spacing and bounce. You’ll learn how to write elegant envelope addresses and create a decorative envelope liner featuring loose calligraphy.

Week 3 – Your Return Address Design

Learn how to write smaller, more delicate lettering and create a simple return-address design you can use to personalise your future stationery.

Week 4 – Writing with Metallic Inks

Discover how metallic paints behave on the nib and how to achieve crisp, shimmering strokes. You’ll create a beautiful quote card using metallic ink for a striking finish.

Week 5 – Your Final Project: A Complete Stationery Set

Bring everything together as you design and write a coordinated greeting card and addressed envelope, applying all the techniques you’ve learned, from nib control and bounce to colour, composition, and decorative touches.

By the end of the course, you’ll not only understand the fundamentals of modern calligraphy, but also have a beautiful collection of handmade stationery: an addressed envelope, a decorative liner, a return-address motif, a metallic quote card, and a finished greeting card.

Most importantly, you’ll feel confident picking up your pen and continuing your calligraphy journey.

In Your Kit

You will receive four different pointed nibs, a pen holder, an A4 Rhodia practice pad, 2 metallic paints, a jar of black calligraphy ink, and a large selection of coloured envelopes and cards. Full colour workbook.
