A Five-week course starting on Thursday 29th October until Thursday 3rd December

Step into the festive season with the art of watercolour calligraphy, where creativity meets Christmas sparkle. Over five weeks, you’ll learn how to combine expressive brush lettering with festive borders, winter florals, and decorative wreaths—perfect for creating unique handmade cards, tags, and seasonal artwork.

We’ll begin with the foundations of brush calligraphy, exploring brush control, watercolour flow, and letter shapes. As you progress, you’ll discover how to blend rich colours in your calligraphy while adding seasonal details such as holly, mistletoe, berries, and frosty foliage.

By the final week, you’ll bring everything together in a selection of hand-painted Christmas card designs.

Course Outline

Each week, you’ll learn a new technique and use it straight away to create a different Christmas card design. By the end of the course, you’ll have five festive designs and plenty of ideas to continue creating at home.

Week 1 – The Foundations of Brush Calligraphy

Learn to control the water brush and paintbrush, using pressure and release to create graceful letters. You’ll put these first skills into practice by designing a simple Christmas card design using your practice drills as a border.

Week 2 – Festive Alphabets

Discover how to adapt your lettering styles and add a seasonal twist to your calligraphy. Choose your favourite style and use it to create a second festive card design with simple leaves framing your calligraphy.

Week 3 – Christmas Colours

Mix and experiment with seasonal palettes, from traditional reds, greens and golds to icy winter tones. Explore blending, ombré effects and transparency, then use your chosen colours in a new card design.

Week 4 – Festive Borders & Florals

Create simple holly sprigs, mistletoe, and winter berries, and learn how to use them as borders to frame your lettering. You’ll combine these elements in your fourth Christmas card design.

Week 5 – Bringing It All Together

Plan, sketch and compose a final Christmas card, bringing together your favourite lettering, colour and foliage techniques from across the course.
