Calligraphy Tutor: Maisie Minett

Join us for a creative and relaxing day in our Birdham studio learning the basics of nib and brush calligraphy. This workshop runs from 10 am until 4 pm. We provide you with refreshments throughout the day, along with a delicious lunch. Beginner level, all the materials needed are provided.

Have you wondered what modern calligraphy is all about, and what pens you should be trying? Well, let us guide you through all the options in this day of exploration. You will try forming alphabets and words using a pointed nib, and rather than worrying about getting every letter identical, you can relax and have fun with it. We will show you how to blend colours into your calligraphy, as well as add metallics, to make your lettering shimmer.

After a delicious lunch, we will move on to brush pens, using a range of types and colours so you can see which you enjoy the most and explore the various effects that can be achieved with each. This way of working is more spontaneous, and with the skills you gained from the morning session you will be able to decide whether you want to continue to build on your modern calligraphy skills using nibs or brush pens.

You will work on beautiful templates and create finished pieces that you can frame and keep for yourself or give as a charming personal gift. With these techniques in your repertoire, you'll soon be creating greeting cards, party invitations and artwork for your home and loved ones!

As well as guiding the whole class with demonstrations and instructions, your tutor will provide you with one-on-one tuition and troubleshoot any issues you may come across.

We have a small shop at our studio, stocking some of our favourite calligraphy supplies, including the items you will have used during your workshop so that you can buy your favourites and continue your calligraphy journey at home!
