About the Event
Copperplate calligraphy 4-week course - beginner to intermediate level.
This course will run every Saturday morning from 6th - 27th March for 4 weeks, 10am -12pm.
Tutor: Laura Prudence.
If you’ve admired beautiful Copperplate calligraphy and wished you too could create perfectly formed symmetrical lettering, here is your chance to learn!
Kirsten has broken down the techniques and rules of this formal, classic style into easily digestible steps. If you've been too nervous to try it before, fear not - we’ll make it fun!
Whether you are a complete beginner or looking to improve your style, we will take your Copperplate from basic strokes to writing stunning calligraphic quotes, complete with fabulous flourishes in 4 weeks.
Our expert tutor will take you through everything you need to know including:
- why and when to use different line guides
- getting to grips with forming words
- refine your spacing and rule up and center your work
- explore simple layouts and go through the process of composition, from the first draft to the final piece
- what to do when ascenders and descenders bump into each other
- A whole session devoted to practicing flourishing so that you can feel confident about where and how to add a swirl and a swash
We'll give you our top tips and simple ways to practice at home and improve muscle memory, building on the skills learned from each lesson to take your calligraphy to the next level
Everything you need for the course will be supplied and posted to you.
Every session of this course will be recorded, so if you miss a week for any reason you will able to watch the recording to catch up!
Your Copperplate Calligraphy Kit includes:
An oblique pen holder, 3 different Copperplate nibs to try, layout paper, practice pad, black, gold, and white inks, so that you can work onto dark cards with stunning metallics and of course all the worksheets, templates, black and white cards and gift tags that you need for the 4 weeks, plus a little extra if you'd like to do the 'homework' exercises.
In addition, you will need: a pencil, ruler, rubber, and though not essential, we would recommend having a light pad which is available to purchase from our shop.
This workshop will be hosted via Zoom. To participate, you need a computer that has video and audio capabilities. We'd recommend using a laptop so you can easily tilt your webcam towards your work so we can see your progress. If you have a PC with a fixed webcam you can always hold your work up to it. If you opt for using a smartphone with the Zoom app, you will need a holder or somewhere to place it throughout the workshop so that your hands are free to do calligraphy and you may find it trickier to view the demonstrations at such a small size.
You will need a good WiFi connection. You can find the full system requirements here.
You will receive your Zoom link in your confirmation email, and again in your reminder email 3 days before the workshop, so please check your spam if you haven't received it.
,PLEASE NOTE Once your kit has been posted, workshop tickets are not refundable. This does not affect your statutory rights.
