Join Kirsten Burke and Chinese calligraphy expert Mabel Lau for this incredible new calligraphy experience! 

All the way from Hong Kong, Mabel will teach you the basics of Chinese calligraphy using a brush, ink and traditional rice paper.

She will demonstrate how to write Chinese New Year couplets, which are two lines of a poem, often written on red paper. It is the most common and important custom when celebrating Chinese New Year, expressing people’s wishes for a better life in the coming year.

You will learn how to control the brush; create strokes and form Chinese characters, and finish by writing your own New Year couplets.

Mabel explains "Through the movement and flow of Chinese characters, I hope to help you find positivity, calmness and to embrace the art of slow living in our hectic world." 

This calming session, taken in the comfort of your home will give you an understanding of Chinese brush lettering and its history. 

An online workshop is a wonderful way to learn calligraphy, as you are able to watch your tutor demonstrate up close on your screen so that every letter stroke and movement of the brush and hand is magnified and easy to follow. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners — no experience is necessary.

Your  Kit

Tickets for this brush calligraphy live-streamed workshop include a traditional Chinese goathair brush, a whole bottle of Sumi ink, a mini jam jar to dip your ink into, guidesheets, plus stunning patterned sheets of rice paper. Your kit will be posted out to you the week prior to your workshop.

This workshop will be hosted via Zoom. All you need is a PC, Mac, laptop, or tablet. We wouldn't recommend a phone as we will be very small on your screen. Your Zoom invite will come with your booking email confirmation, and we'll send it to you again 3 days before your workshop in your reminder email.
