We're thrilled to be able to offer our first 'Hybrid' 10-week watercolour calligraphy course, for beginners. This means that we will teach a small group in the studio but also have a large screen where we will be demonstrating and guiding our online students at the same time using overhead cameras. This is a fantastic option for all students, as it means that all the sessions are recorded and if you are unable to attend one week in person, you can either join us online or watch the recording at another time that is convenient.

This is a ten week course starting on 18th January and running through until 29th March. Please note there will be no session on the 15th February due to half term.

The true freedom of brush calligraphy is that you can work at any size and on pretty much any surface, from walls to wine glasses! You’ll be taught how to control the brush in simple steps, so that we can build your confidence, by gradually adding to your understanding of the techniques which make brush calligraphy so beautiful.  

We'll introduce you to the multiple ways to incorporate colour into your brush lettering. We'll cover blending, working with washes, discovering degrees of transparency, ombré effects and building up the depth of colour within your calligraphy - all using the humble paintbrush!

Week 1 The Foundations of Brush Calligraphy and controlling the brush. An introduction to creating letters with a water brush and paintbrush. How hard to press and where to change the pressure.

Week 2 Understanding alphabets and how to alter the style of your lettering.

Week 3 Mixing your colours, colour terms, experiments and using colour effectively.

Week 4 Using colour theory to create lettering compositions.

Week 5 Creative background washes, water control and exploring different effects.

Week 6 Combining calligraphy layouts with colour washes.

Week 7 Create beautiful loose watercolour florals to decorate your work.

Week 8 Combining calligraphy and Illustration. Creating borders and decorations.

Week 9 Constructing a Wreath and composing a finished piece, sketches and stages of a design.

Week 10 Completing the final piece incorporating a wash, wreath, border or another decorative element. Personalised guidance with composition and colour choices.
