Kirsten Burke and Jill Hembling set up The Modern Calligraphy Company in 1997, establishing it as the leading contemporary calligraphy company in the UK. 

 The company began life by creating pieces in calligraphy for The Globe Theatre- London.

Having begun to run modern calligraphy workshops for luxury brands, Bonnier Publishing approached them to create a book to teach beginners. Their book ‘Secrets of Modern Calligraphy’ proved hugely popular, being translated into Dutch and Slovak as well as being taken by American publishers. Teaching modern calligraphy in simple steps came naturally to them, and so when asked to create a follow-up book 'Secrets of Brush Calligraphy' they happily agreed. A practice pad followed, and then the pocket sized title ‘The Little Book of Calming Calligraphy’. Their latest book 'A Year in Calligraphy' came out in 2019, with different projects for each month of the year. It is their most ambitious so far, and will keep even the most enthusiastic calligraphers busy as it is packed with ideas, photography and expert advise.
